History Of KDO (Debat Terbuka Kenyalang)

Critical thinking is one of the skills that are needed for a community to forward themselves. With this awareness, UiTM Sarawak's Debate Unit has felt the dire need to start up a debating culture in UiTM Sarawak itself. Our debaters realized that, in order to start a debating culture in one area, a catalyst must be started. Hence, KDO was formed in the year 2009. When we started, many obstacles were needed to be hurdled. We lost friends in the process, and at times making newer friends. Our friend, Khairul Azizi, passed away before the project became a reality. Hence, we dedicate KDO to his loving memory. A great man, with a vision, we hope that his legacy, KDO, would be further appreciated by future generations of debaters.

In 2010, Paul Racha, took up the mantle as our convener for the event, realizing the goal and dream of our friend, Azizi. It became the 1st Debate Open Tournament in Sarawak. The event was then awarded as "Program Ilmiah Terbaik , Tempat Kedua" for the whole of UiTM, losing only to the well established Arau Open in Perlis. The achievement was considered remarkable as it was a first time event and the committee members were totally comprised of students and had no past experience in managing debate tournaments before. This year, our unit has aimed at being a bigger competition and of better quality. Again, we shall scream out, "Let's KDO.
